Feed the Poor and Improve Your Vocab Simultaneously!

I recently chanced upon this website www.freerice.com.

It's a relatively new initiative for garnering rice donations to 3rd world countries by the United Nations and the World Food Program. All one has to do is to answer the vocabulary questions. Each time we get it right, 10 grains (yes, only measly 10 grains) are donated by the sponsors.

No additional costs, no signing up to newsletters, no petitions and no monetary donations which then get whittled down to a tiny percentage after subtracting the administrative costs. There's nothing to lose other than bytes of download, which is tiny compared to those of you out there who download movies.

There are 50 vocab levels and according to the website, only a small percentage of people get past level 48. Unfortunately, i'm not one of them :(

When i'm not in the mood to randomly guess the answers to those tough questions, i get the first 4 questions designed to determine our level wrong. Then i just accumulate rice grains starting from level 1 and slowly work my way up.

Gives me a sense that i'm contributing to a meaningful cause grain by grain. Pretty addictive stuff.
