Part 9

Part 1 - 8 here.

Jordan drove smoothly towards the appointed restaurant, unaware of the breath taking scenery before him. As the setting sun lit the autumn leaves ablaze in a sea of flaming golden red, he flicked his gaze over to Sam sporadically, observing the golden sheen the sunlight cast on her tresses as she sat looking pensively out the window. His own thoughts floated back to the phone call they had just received.

♪ This is the time, this is the day that we've been waiting for. All the world will stop to watch you shine. ♪

Seeing Liz's name flashing on the screen of his mobile, Jordan reached for his phone and pressed the speaker button.

"Speak up. You're on speaker." Jordan intoned, omitting the niceties.

"Hi Liz. Are you going to be late?" Sam asked, intuitively knowing that something had come up."

Actually, I called to let you guys know I'm not able to make it for dinner." Liz sighed melodramatically, "Jordan why don't you have dinner with Sam in my place instead." From the tone of her voice, Jordan could tell that it was not a suggestion.

"What?" He sputtered. "How can you ask for a date and then renegade at the last moment." Trying to sound indignant for Sam's sake instead of thinking about the infringement on his evening.

"Of course, i prefer to spend my evening apologising to sleazy, filthy-rich old men for someone else's miscalculations instead." She drawled sarcastically. Jordan shut his lips instantly.

"Don't worry about it Liz. You concentrate on your work. Jordan and I will be able to sort things out on this end." Now that Liz couldn't make it to dinner, she was going to ask Jordan to drop her off at the nearest train station instead.

"I'm afraid i'll have to take a rain check Sam. Sorry about that. In any case, dinner is on me. I've ordered and had a 1996 bottle of Chteau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac charged to my credit card, so you guys go ahead and enjoy yourselves." Liz said a little too generously.

Damn. No chance of getting out of it now.

Jordan had been guilt-tripped into taking Sam to dinner and it was not in Sam's personality to let a $5 fruit juice go to waste, let alone a $200 bottle of wine.

Sam stared out of her passenger seat window, taking in the shimmering leaves as they drove down the tree-lined street. Her thoughts embarking on a journey into the recesses of her memory.

She could just see the glimmer of a shadow of George sitting beside her in the driver's seat as they travelled down a similar tree-lined street on another Valentine's Day in the past.

Was it that long ago that the image in her mind's eye was starting to blur at the edges?

Would she be able to identify the signs in their relationship that would have led to the present day's state of affairs if she scrutinised her past?

Memory is such a fickle thing. It can be embellished or dampened by emotions. Regrettable events have a tendency to resurface unbidden while certain pleasant moments fade and then disappear altogether. Sam wasn't sure if she could trust herself not to tamper with her own memories.

Her memory was failing her again in another aspect. 5 minutes of small talk she could muster, but she couldn't for the life of her remember how to maintain such a conversation for the duration of a meal. She unconsciously bit on her lower lip in ponderance.

"So... How did Liz coerce you into becoming her slave Jordan?" she ventured.

Part 8

As the doors of the lift shut, Jordan hastily removed his arm from Sam's shoulder as Sam stepped away from his side.

"I'm sorry for putting my arm around you without prior consent." Jordan apologised as he appraised the object of Liz's affection more intently.

"It's ok. I'm almost certain that it was Liz who instructed you to do that." Sam smiled knowingly.

As his first assignment under "enslavement", Jordan was appalled that his instructions included picking up Liz's date, some schmuck called Sam, pretend to be the boyfriend and act intimately in front of his colleagues, all as some sort of prank.

Jordan detests pranks, loathes false pretenses and abhors any bodily contact with beings of the same gender. He was about to buck when Liz nonchalantly reminded him," in that case, you can deal with your own catastrophe."

The image of being bound hand and feet, forced at knife point off the gang plank into a sea of sharks flashed across his mind. The annihilation of his budding career must be avoided at all costs, even if it meant acting like a homosexual. Jordan gritted his teeth and grudgingly accepted.

His relief was monumental when he discovered that this petite brunette with a distant aura yet alluring smile was his target. Scrutinising her impenetrable hazel eyes, button nose and luscious lips, he was struck by a disturbing realisation.

Liz is dating a woman.

Part 7

Part 1 - 6 here.

Alex watched Sam as she entered his office with a stack of paperwork balanced precariously in her right hand, hurriedly crossed the remaining 2 feet to his desk and almost dumped it into his in-tray in a desperate attempt to set it down before the mountainous pile began to disintegrate.

Alex gave her a mock look of displeasure, "Sam, when you hand in this much work at the end of the day, you make me look like an incompetent boss who can't keep up with his subordinates."

"Erm, I'm sorry?" Sam ventured hesitantly, a look of uncertainty creeping into her expressive brown eyes. Lately they haven't been smiling much. It comes as no surprise the way everyone has been gossiping about her and his predecessor's breakup at every given opportunity.

Alex sighed inwardly at his most indispensable staff member, whose seriousness is her greatest asset and fault.

Why does she not understand any of my jokes or compliments?

"I'm just kidding" he reassured, "looks like my diabolical plan to detain you further in the office has failed miserably."

"Boss, if you wanted me to stay back to help, just say the word." Sam diligently replied.

There goes my trusted sidekick taking things at face value again.

Out of the corner of his eyes, Alex noticed a flicker of excitement pulsing through beyond his glass windows. A quick glance identified a tall, cleanly shaven chap with chiseled features dressed in a tailored business suit being surrounded at Sam's cubicle by his already growing horde of adoring fans.

"Forget i said that. Don't keep your date waiting now." He gestured towards the young, attractive and probably rich intruder.

Alex observed Sam spin around quickly and upon recognition, let an almost inaudible gasp escape from her lips. Was there a hint of fluster, or was it just his imagination?

Probably just amazed at how gorgeous he looks and distressed by all the hungry lions swarming around him.

"Yes boss. I'll be taking my leave then." Sam dipped her head in a slight bow and retreated out of his office, walking briskly towards the stranger, her silky brown hair swirling around her shoulders.

Alex tried to peel his eyes away from watching Sam swiftly extricate her date from the marauding mob. The pair walked out to the lifts, his hand draped casually over her somewhat stiff shoulders and disappeared behind the closing doors of that death trap otherwise known as the elevator.

He stepped out of his office, a furrow in his brow, "Guys, you can keep pining after that mini celebrity who has just left the building and miss your dates tonight, or get back to work and go home before bedtime. Which is it?"

"Alex! Why are you punishing us?" Mia wailed in her lilting voice.

"What do you think?" Alex shot them a dark sinister look before settling himself back in his office.

He muttered to himself, "Lucky for me, i'm married to my work."

Part 6

"Ouch!" Sam exclaimed in protest to the whack she received on her head.

She gazed up from her work and found the twinkling dark eyes and crooked smile of her new boss. In truth, her not-so-new boss, Alex started 6 months ago to be exact, right after George transferred to the headquarters. Somehow or another, her mind has come to refer to George as the old boss and Alex the new boss, irregardless of how long he's been working with them.

"Sam, i've noticed a rather disturbing behaviour you've exhibited today." Alex said in a serious tone.

"Eh? What is it boss?" Sam asked in puzzlement. She has never been able to call him by his first name like the rest of the office staff despite his easy-going demeanor.

At the sound of a possible reprimand, Sam's neighbouring cubicle inhabitants have all peeped over the partition for want of a better view.

"Just because you've got a date tonight that you desperately want to attend punctually doesn't mean that you can rush through your work at the expense of lunch." Alex admonished severely.

Sam glanced at her wrist watch which had the small hand pointed at 3. Time sneakily slips by when she's buried in work. Her unforgiving stomach chose at that instance to emit an ungracious grumble.

"Hehe... looks like i'm hungry." Sam smiled in embarrassment.

"Go get something to eat before you get a stomach ulcer. The work can wait, even if you have to delay it till tomorrow." Alex said gently while ruffling Sam's hair.

Sam ignored the death rays aimed at her from across the partitions. It was annoying and at most deeply frustrating to be thought of as undesirable, desperate and a failure at relationships. She could deal with it as these labels do not diminish the reputation of her capabilities and competency at carrying out her job. But being perceived to be receiving special treatment from her superiors is a line that cannot be crossed. Oe else she might become the target of the next witch hunt.

She motioned for Alex to come closer as she whispered, "Boss, you're being very nice to me, which i appreciate, but it will look like i've been given preferential treatment and it impacts on your impartial image."

"Oh i see. Thanks for pointing that out." Alex whispered back in a conspiratory tone. He stood back, cleared his throat and proclaimed in a commanding voice, "Sam! Eat something before you collapse and cost me precious man hours. I need you to finish your work before you leave tonight. To make it fair, so does everyone else!"

Alex winked at her before he walked away. A collective groan was heard as soon as Alex closed his office door. Sam froze in her seat amidst a flurry of phone calls to partners begging to postpone their long awaited valentine's dinner by a few hours.

Oh great. Very helpful that is. As if everyone is not already looking for a reason to lynch me.

Sam decided that it was probably wisest to leave temporarily, until all the murderous intents have muted down to negative sentiments. She scurried out of her office and away from the death rays that were rapidly multiplying, muttering under her breath about her luck.

Part 5

Part 1 - 4 here

The name of a devil disguised as her best friend flashed on the screen of her phone. Sam picked it up, acutely aware that everyone was listening in on the conversation.

"Hello" Sam answered softly with a hand over the mouth piece.

"Hi beautiful, what are you wearing today?" Liz drawled on the other side of the phone in her husky voice.

"Why are you calling me and why do you need to know what i'm wearing?" Sam shot back, her suspicions rising.

"Do i really need a reason to call my best friend? Just humour me will you, i'm curious about your outfit." Liz replied innocently.

"Ok. Navy blue top, black pleated skirt and a white jacket."

"Tsk tsk... Can't you wear something nicer for dinner tonight? You know accessorize a little?" Liz clucked like a disapproving mother.

"So you're the one who sent me the flowers!" Sam exclaimed in disbelief. Sudden realisation made her feel like an accomplice in the game of make-believe-boyfriend. Sam could see Mia and her colleagues visibly prick up their ears, hushed whispers and knowing looks circulating.

"Aren't i sweet? I bet everyone has been interrogating you about it." Liz chuckled heartily. "Anyway, i'm sending my minion to pick you up for dinner."

"You don't have to do that. It's too much trouble to pick me up. I can make my own way there." Sam declined the offer.

"Chill, it's all part of the service. Enjoy it while it lasts. I've gotta go now." Liz abruptly ended the conversation.

That's just like her. Boy does she have lots of answering to do tonight! Causing me all this grief.

Sam plonked herself back onto her swivel chair unceremoniously and was immediately bombarded by a string of questions and comments from the fickle mob, to which she only smiled in reply. Let them make their own conclusions, she is neither going to refute nor confirm any rumours. In a way, that saves her from lying.

Having assuaged her conscience, she assessed the amount of work awaiting her and plunged ferociously into it, whittling her tasks away speedily in eager anticipation of leaving work on time for a girl's night out.

Sam managed a quick glance at the card before it was spirited away by eager fingers. An eruption of speculative whispers soon followed.

After a pregnant pause, Mia finally voiced a string of burning questions, "Who is L? Is he your boyfriend? How long have you been together? Is he real?"

Naturally, leaving the insinuation that Sam had sent the flowers to herself in desperation hanging in the air.

Sam felt her face start to sting as her anger began to stir in the pits of her stomach. First she had to endure getting labelled as "damaged goods", then listen to snide comments about her all too public break up and now face the soft interrogation of the crones to which she was already sentenced as a fraud. However, the notion that she would actually sink to their level of immaturity was the greatest insult.

She felt herself going red with indignation and frustration. Frustration at them and at herself for turning red. It was only going to be interpreted as embarrassment and further cement their conviction.

"Are you saying that i sent myself these flowers to play make pretend boyfriend?" Sam bristled with barely concealed loathing.

"Well, it's just that we've never seen any signs of you finding a new man." Mia smiled archedly back.

♪When i find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be... ♪

Sam's familiar ringtone broke the escalating tension.

Part 3

She pretended not to have noticed the little blob of a head from the periphery of her visual field and continued sorting material into the different trays on her desk in the vain hopes that the little blob was just a figment of her imagination.

"Hi Sam, your jacket makes you look really slim today." A lilting voice floated into her ears.

Tremendously observant you are, but the same jacket for the whole week i have been wearing.

Sam lifted her head slowly and plastered her special smile, mastered in 2 months at a customer service help desk, onto her face and graciously returned the compliment, milking all the brownie points she could possibly get, "You're looking exceptionally radiant today Mia."

"Oh my, can you tell. My fiance sent me a bouquet of 99 roses. Isn't he sweet. It smells so good. It's meant to signify his everlasting love for me." Mia gushed and whipped out the ostentatiously gigantic bouquet which obscured her entire face from view.

Yes, 99 roses for the next 99 hours in hopes that you'll finally agree to have sex with him.

Without pausing, she went on holding a conversation with herself in her lilting voice just loud enough for everyone within a 10 metre radius to hear, "Did you received anything this morning? Nothing so far, what a shame. Oh dear. You're not still recovering from the time George dumped you, are you?"

By then, half of the beings from Venus had converged at Sam's desk shooting her sympathising looks and all the remaining sentient beings were tuning in to the running commentary of the aftermath of her disastrous love life.

Just broadcast it on the radio why don't you.

George, her long time ex broke up with her over 2 lines via email and physically removed himself by transferring out of their branch to the headquarters. She winced psychologically from the memory.

So the battle begins.

Sam opened her mouth and began forming syllables to her defence but was interrupted by a delivery of 3 black roses "to the loveliest lady in this office, Sam". She looked at it in puzzlement and gazed with disbelief at the accompanying Valentine's Day card.

Part 2

Part 1 here.

As she exited the train, scurrying along with the masses of bodies all shrouded in the same air of commercialised romanticism, she braced herself for the day.

Ducking and weaving through the crowd, she ignored the 4th rose peddler and finally made it into the lifts of the austere office building. She pondered to herself how she came to be in this predicament while standing shoulder to shoulder with a dozen other people, breathing in a barrage of body odours in a small claustrophobic elevator.

She had dedicated 16 golden years of her youth to education in the hopes of fulfilling the eventual goal of becoming a millionaire, a wife and a mother by the time she turned 35. Yet, as the antiquated elevator made it's excruciating climb to the 5th floor, she was nowhere near to making her first million, pushing paper for a job, single and on the wrong side of 25.

The most jarring word for this day, february the 14th, being "single".

After what seems like uncomfortable eons stuck like a statue at attention, she stepped out of the suffocating box of horror, swung open the glass doors, hardened herself and was hit by waves of over-excited voices shrilly calling attention to the bouquet of flowers and boxes of chocolate on their desks.

It wasn't long before a being from Venus popped her head into her cubicle.

Story of her life

Lai and I have decided to do a story-telling relay. Just some experimentation to see where it takes us. Each piece should be about a 100 words. No other rules except for the criteria that it must connect to the previous piece and must make sense.

So here goes:

She opened her eyes to the waltzing sunlight filtered by the billowing silk blinds. Reluctantly, she slid out of bed, tiredness clinging to her like a second skin. She shook it off.

Gingerly, she side-stepped the books haphazardly strewn over the parquet floor and got ready to face the day with an air of resignation.

The inevitable has arrived today.

She gulped down her perfunctory cup of milo before grabbing her notebook carrier, which doubles as her handbag, on her way out of the front door. Thoughts rushing through her mind like a bullet train on a circular track, hurried and pointless, throughout the entire journey to the office.
