A tute today focused on ageing, frailty and disability. We were given the Fraboni Scale of Ageism - a questionnaire which determines if we had ageist attitudes.
Guess what i scored?
Me, always so concerned about the upcoming TKR of the genial one with silver white hair.
Me, the one chasing up physiotherapy exercises and tutes in order to help.
Me, the one who was almost disowned by my extended family due to inflammatory but truthful criticisms of their treatment of the genial one with silver white hair.
I scored 58 and that is on the borderline of normal. (The higher the score the more ageist you are).
Most of my group mates scored in the 40s. Not surprisingly, none of them had to live in close proximity to an old person for prolonged periods of time.
We were considered by our consultants as a rather open minded bunch of young people. Doesn't that mean that a large proportion of the rest of the population would end up in the relatively "ageist" spectrum?
I guess now i have the explanation as to why sometimes i refer to our dear oldies up in Aged Care as gomers. I have ageist tendencies!
