When Out Is Not An Option

During our psych term we had a session with a psychotherapist who engaged us in a philosophical session.

"How much of a person's decision is conscious choice or dictated by circumstances?"

After listening to a number of replies from my more eloquent counterparts, i said,"Being aware of the circumstances that influence our decision is a choice. One can choose to be aware of the influence of the environment, or to remain unaware."

To which the psychotherapist replies, "But is one allowed or not allowed to choose to be aware?"

Man, this psychotherapist was able to extrapolate from what i said in that short paragraph, and reflect my thoughts on how i do not like the system of education, the way we're examined but have to jump through those hoops irregardless if i want my degree and an MBBS attached to my name.

So to reflect back on myself. I've always felt that getting out of the current direction in which my life is heading was not an option. How much of that was my choice to be unaware?

Now that i take on this perspective, does it mean that i have finally chosen to be aware?
