Part 4

Sam managed a quick glance at the card before it was spirited away by eager fingers. An eruption of speculative whispers soon followed.

After a pregnant pause, Mia finally voiced a string of burning questions, "Who is L? Is he your boyfriend? How long have you been together? Is he real?"

Naturally, leaving the insinuation that Sam had sent the flowers to herself in desperation hanging in the air.

Sam felt her face start to sting as her anger began to stir in the pits of her stomach. First she had to endure getting labelled as "damaged goods", then listen to snide comments about her all too public break up and now face the soft interrogation of the crones to which she was already sentenced as a fraud. However, the notion that she would actually sink to their level of immaturity was the greatest insult.

She felt herself going red with indignation and frustration. Frustration at them and at herself for turning red. It was only going to be interpreted as embarrassment and further cement their conviction.

"Are you saying that i sent myself these flowers to play make pretend boyfriend?" Sam bristled with barely concealed loathing.

"Well, it's just that we've never seen any signs of you finding a new man." Mia smiled archedly back.

When i find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be...

Sam's familiar ringtone broke the escalating tension.
